All manner of hill-tribe clothing, jewellery and handicrafts, some quite old, are on sale – after fierce bargaining – in the main Sa Pa Market. Sa Pa Church

Replaced in the last decade with all manner of mini-hotels and karaoke bars, only a few original buildings, replete with balconies and cupolas, linger from Sa Pa’s days as a French hill station. One of the most noteworthy is Sa Pa Catholic Church. Built in 1930, it was shelled in 1952 by the French and again, in 1979, by the Chinese. Just 3km (2 miles) outside of Sa Pa is the well-trodden Black Hmong village of Cat Cat. The Black Hmong children here squat bare-bottomed in the dirt and pose for tourists’ cameras (in return for money, of course). Dozens of visitors tramp through this small stilt-house village daily on their way to the nearby Silver Falls (Thac Bac), about 12km (7 miles) out of town. Also near the falls is a long wooden suspension bridge called Cloud Bridge (Cau May). Several outlying villages, such as Ta Van, Sin Chai and Ta Phin, make for pleasant and relatively easy treks. Mount Fansipan

For the truly adventurous (or foolhardy), there is Mount Fansipan (Nui Phan Si Pan), Vietnam’s highest peak at 3,143m (10,310ft), to conquer. A guide is mandatory (by law) for the trek to the summit, which takes a minimum of three days to complete. Directly west of Sa Pa and located in Hoang Lien Son National Park, the scenery is utterly magnificent, notable for its rhododendron-rich forests and exceptional birdlife.

While there is some rather threadbare camping equipment available for rent in Sa Pa, most climbers choose to outfit themselves for the trek in Hanoi, where it’s easy to find good fleece jackets and sturdy shoes. While not technically demanding, it’s a long way up the mountain and the trek is not to be underestimated, particularly in rain or misty conditions. Closer to the summit, the ascent involves negotiating a number of steep, rocky patches and can be treacherous if the ground is wet. March is perhaps the best time to visit as this is the peak of the dry season. If you decide to make the trip, be sure to book with an experienced local operator.

At an altitude of over 1,000m, Tam Dao was once home to over 200 French villas, a collection of hotels and restaurants, a swimming pool and even a dance auditorium all coming together to form northern Vietnam's first hill station and health spa. The area offers some easy hiking in and around its tree-covered summit, and while some of the trails tend to see more goats than backpack-wielding tourists, the hill station is popular with Vietnamese tourists, so weekends can be busy -- if you want the place to yourself, try for a weekday jaunt. LE COCHINCHINE

The national park itself is a cool pine forest with walking trails leading off on numerous hikes around its crown. Hiking trips can be organised from hotels with local guides up to the three peaks. Recent reports suggest that wildlife is returning to the area after long periods of depletion due to slash and burn farming and hunting. Notably, the hawk and white collar crow, previously thought to be extinct, are now literally flocking to the park. Tam Dao Hill Station

To satisfy the hordes of domestic tourists, who largely come for the cooler climate and blaring karaoke, there's a reasonable amount of development and construction going on -- when this will settle down remains unclear.

Most of Tam Dao was destroyed by the Viet Minh in their war with the French but you can still see a few relics of the French presence here, including the empty pool and a few of the more dilapidated villas. But the villas are all going the way of the dodo and their more modern replacements are far from charming.

Best described as a half fishbowl wedged onto a hilltop, Tam Dao Hill Station backs onto a large pine forest. The centre of town is marked by the park, with the com pho places and the large hotels behind it.

Sitting over the drop onto the plains sits a decrepit, rundown hotel, from the roof of which a splendid view can be enjoyed of the plains below. As you sit there, you can imagine the balls and parties that would have been held on this rooftop back when the French still ran the place.

A new golf course and villa complex is being built on the road up to Tam Dao's peak. At present it offers nine holes with plans to complete the other nine before October 2006. It represents quite a spectacle contrasting bright pitch perfect lawns and greens with the hills overlooking the course. Conical hatted caddies can accompany you as you putt around the course and although incomplete it offers some fantastic golf for enthusiasts eager to hit a small white ball away from themselves. Final plans for the resort include a professional pro shop, resort-style hotel, villas, restaurants and shops.

Drinking tea or coffee might be great for warming up, but in the open-fronted — or outdoor — coffee shops in Hanoi you’ll still need to keep your coat on. For somewhere a bit more weather-proof head south to Cong Caphe or over to Cafe Duy Tri near West Lake. The seats at Duy Tri aren’t designed for spending time on, but it’s certainly cosy (that is, small) and the tasty drinks — and free WiFi — can keep you occupied for hours. For a more tourist- and Western-orientated coffee drinking joint try old-timer Puku, which at least has the sofas, if not the fireplace. Escaping the cold in Hanoi

If you’re more a fan of alcoholic beverages then our top picks are Polite Pub on Bao Khanh, Finnegans on Luong Ngoc Quyen and Le Pub on Hang Be. We particularly like Polite Pub for its gloomy — in a good way — atmosphere, cold draft beer and music, but the large pool table is a draw as well. Finnegans is as close to an Irish pub as you’ll get here and has high-backed booths, both of which are high on the list of “things which make a pub cosy”, and shows sports on a large screen. Finally, the newly decorated upstairs area at Le Pub is well protected from the outside elements and offers a decent comfort food menu.

Outside of Hoan Kiem district, if you’re over near West Lake check out Red River Tea Rooms which is heated and provides a selection of  boardgames and books, which can be enjoyed in the comfy back room — or anywhere in the pub really, there are no rules. Down towards Vincom, round the corner from DC Bistro, you’ll find Tadioto. This very highly-regarded hangout actually does have a fireplace, but even without it, it’s still a very welcoming place to while away the hours, either during the day or all night.
Icy glasses aren’t really necessary in this weather.
Our final bar recommendation is Bar Betta. The eclectic inside area is comfortable and inviting and cuddling up under the space heaters on the roof terrace you feel like you’re cheating the temperature. Shame the service is poor.
But if money were no object we’d be spending more time at the Bamboo Bar at the Sofitel Metropole Legend Hotel. It may be an outside bar but blankets are provided to accompany your hot winter drink — try the hot cider — and a visit alone is enough to jerk us out of our winter blues.
Of course, if you want to stay out and about, absorbing Hanoi’s unique culture, then wrap up and warm yourself from the inside out with hotpot or a steaming bowl of pho. Above all, don’t let the cold put you off. Hanoi is a fantastic place to visit at any time of year — you just need to come prepared.

The Muong group and their typical culture

The Muong have a population of around 1 million who live mainly in northern provinces like Hoa Binh and Thanh Hoa. The Muong culture is related to Hoa Binh culture dating back more than 10,000 years.
The Muong share ethnic roots with the Vietnamese people and their language is classified in the Vietnamese – Muong language branch. The Muong live in mountainous areas which have abundant land for growing wet rice. In a Muong hamlet, stilt houses shelter in the shade of big trees, huddle against the mountain, and look out on vast rice fields. The Muong’s costume is special. Men often wear a round-neck shirt which opens in the front and has two pockets. Their pants have large trouser legs. On special occasions, the Muong men wear a purple or yellow silk shirt inside a long, white ceremonial robe. Quach Van Suong of Vo Do hamlet, Nhan Nghia commune, Hoa Binh, said: “When we were small our elders taught us the typical cultural features of our group reflected in our costume. The Muong women wear a long, black dress and a white or brown shirt with a line of buttons in the front and long sleeves. They wind a white or indigo headscarf around their head. The highlights of the Muong costume are embroidery on the dress hem and belt. It requires skill and artistic talent to design the patterns and harmonize the colors of the costume. Quach Thi Lan of Nhan Nghia commune says there are 40 popular patterns, of which the dragon is the favorite image. “The most important step in weaving a dragon is to count the threads used to make the dragon head, wings, and body. The Muong have diverse folk arts including folk songs and poems, sorcerer’s worshiping songs, tales, proverbs, lullabies, and riddle songs. The gong is the most popular musical instrument along with the flute, the two-string violin, the drum, and the panpipe. Bui Thi Xuan, a member of the Club for preserving the Muong culture in Luc Doi hamlet, said the Muong have folk songs for every event such as a house warming, duet singing in the spring, and long epics. “The Club is collecting old songs to teach the children. Young people learn songs to sing during daily activities or at a wedding ceremony. When I was young, we worked and sang songs all the time.”
